The mining of coal and ironstone began in the Darran Valley during the early 1800’s, and this book aims to provide an insight into its development, and its eventual demise during the mid 1970’s. It also contains a background to the valley’s geological history, the procedures involved in obtaining mining leases, rail transportation and information on the many mines that were located within the valley.
Collieries are well known for their dangerous environments which, too often, are the causes of, and contributors to, injury and death. As such, details of major disasters and “unusual” accidents are included, together with safety related incidents that the author experienced whilst working at Ogilvie Colliery.
It is not often that a murder is associated with a colliery but one such event is featured in this book.
